Description:
Located on the beautiful Sarapiqui River, the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center is looking for a volunteer to become our new Environmental Education Coordinator. The position will begin in January 2010 with a minimum commitment of six months. This volunteer will help the Center further its mission by implementing its conservation and environmental education ideals by providing classes to rural community schools, as well as working with ongoing environmental projects at the Center such as Ornithology Club. In addition, they are responsible for working to integrate environmental themes such as water quality, waste management, and wildlife identification into the Center's other programs such as after-school, community development and tourism. Responsibilities include creating curriculum and teaching environmental education classes in Spanish to local children and teens, assisting community members in the formation and development of local conservation projects, and finding ways to promote conservation and an environmental ethic in the area.
Highlights:
In your free time, the volunteer can enjoy the Sarapiqui River and the nearby rainforest reserve. You will work with a small international staff and have the freedom to put your own personal touch on the environmental education program. You will also have the chance to live with a local Costa Rican family and improve your Spanish speaking skills.
Qualifications:
Preferred applicants will have the following qualifications: * Undergraduate degree with a science background * Experience working with children and planning activities and projects * Ability to write, update and search for new curriculum materials and program development * Advanced level of Spanish * Computer skills, GIS a plus
