Community Work and Tourism on Brazil's Coast (Salvador)
Brazil
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: multiple start dates available year round
Description:
Be part of it with i-to-i! Our goal is to achieve 400yrs of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008. So far we have achieved 325yrs which when broken down means we achieved the following: - Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world - A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centres - Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more - At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need - More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars Do you want to come to a party? Salvador is a riot of colour that hits you from every direction. The only thing better than the bright white smiles and exotic clothes is the constant suggestion that a full scale street party is about to break out; and things are even better once you get past the arrivals desk! Wandering around the city you'll wonder why Salvador's tourist industry needs any assistance! In fact you'd be right; it's the tourist industry itself that provides the help. This project helps children from poorer backgrounds prepare for careers in the tourist industry. As well as supporting classroom activities, you will help create teaching materials, plan and execute promotional campaigns and help to train youngsters in skills pertinent to the tourism business. We will also include our TEFL certification when you sign up to the project. Find out more about i-to-i, watch their short video here: http://video.i-to-i.com/site-videos/video.html
Highlights:
This is your chance to get to grips with tourism in the beautiful coastal area of Salvador where the sun (almost) always shines! As an international volunteer you will be in a perfect position to assist with a unique project which works with youngsters from low-income families, helping them find a way into a brighter and better future in their own home. Salvador is on the east coast of Brazil in the state of Bahia. It has a unique and vibrant culture based around its African roots which is reflected in its music, dance and religion. The historic centre boasts ornate churches and cobbled streets. There are fantastic beaches within 45 minutes of the city centre and relaxed islands off the coast.
Qualifications:
It is vital that you approach this project with a professional attitude, in order to set an example to the teenagers and young adults. Some professional experience in the tourism industry would be a great advantage, although not essential, providing you can demonstrate at least awareness and a serious interest in the industry. We recommend that you learn as much Portuguese and Spanish as possible prior to your placement.
Cost in US$: $1790.00 for 4 weeks, $300.00 for every week thereafter
